Always Before Me

Book Review:

The only real flaw in Davalynn Spencer's new book Always Before Me is its subtitle of Devotions for Women. Although the devotions are written and told from a woman's perspective, the lessons she teaches are valuable to women, men, and teens. My personal favorite is one in which she says that the Bible calls on us to be people who "rise up on wings of eagles," (Isaiah 40:31) yet too many of us flit and zoom and zip around like hummingbirds, always busy with projects and to-do lists and seldom any time to listen to the still quiet voice of our Lord. (Yes, men need that reminder, too!)

Her other examples are equally homespun yet wise. She writes about a lantern that cannot be lit because it has a new wick that has not absorbed the oil of the lamp as yet. This she likens to those of us who want to shine for Christ yet do not absorb him into our lives. She notes that the Dead Sea is "dead" because it allows water to flow in, yet never allows water to leave. Likewise, those of us who do deeds just for ourselves and pray just for our own needs become equally stagnant and poisoned. There is a similarity here in these devotions to the common illustrations Jesus used in telling His parables.

The book is a devotional guide containing 31 devotions, one for each morning of the month. They offer illustrations, Bible verses, and object lessons. The writing is excellent, the content is pertinent to modern readers, and the material is biblically solid. Highly recommended. – Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, Christian Book Previews.com
